Cost per square foot installed

Every cost guide prices installed turf by the square foot, and none of them publishes a Florida or Broward figure. Here is what each national guide gives:

  • HomeGuide (October 2025): $10 to $25
  • LawnStarter: $15 to $19 for mid-quality turf
  • Thumbtack: $5 to $20 overall, $7 to $15 for jobs under 1,500 sq ft
  • Lawn Love: $5.45 to $20
  • Fixr (2022): $5 to $12.50

The nearest regional data, LawnStarter's Southeast table, runs $14 to $17 and lists no Florida city. The guides also disagree on labor: HomeGuide and Lawn Love put it at 50% to 60% of the bill, while Fixr says materials are more than half. Compare line items, not only totals.

Cost by yard size: 200, 300, 500 and 1,000 sq ft

Yard What the guides give
200 sq ft Angi's worked example: turf $400 to $1,600, labor $600 to $1,800, infill $50 to $350, digging $150 to $600, sod disposal $24 to $75. Angi sums it as $6 to $22 per sq ft
300 sq ft No guide prices it directly. Thumbtack's $7 to $15 rate for smaller jobs works out to $2,100 to $4,500
500 sq ft HomeGuide $5,000 to $12,500. LawnStarter $7,400 to $9,350. Angi: materials $1,000 to $4,000 plus labor $2,000 to $4,500
1,000 sq ft HomeGuide $10,000 to $25,000. Angi: materials $2,000 to $8,000 plus labor $4,000 to $9,000
2,000 sq ft HomeGuide $20,000 to $50,000. Angi: materials $4,000 to $16,000 plus labor $8,000 to $18,000

What moves the price

  • Taking out the old lawn. Angi prices grass removal at $1 to $2.75 a square foot, Lawn Love at $0.88 to $1.84. Digging runs $50 to $200 per cubic yard and hauling the soil away another $8 to $25 per cubic yard (Angi), so check that disposal is on the quote.
  • Base and weed barrier. Angi's base costs $1.20 to $2.25 a square foot, while Lawn Love has road base at $0.30 to $0.70. Weed barrier adds $0.40 to $0.80.
  • Drainage and grading. A drainage system ranges from $1,000 to $4,000+ in HomeGuide's guide and $2,100 to $7,000 in Angi's. Regrading a yard is another $1,000 to $3,300 in Angi's list.
  • The turf. Per square foot, Angi has polypropylene at $2 to $5, polyethylene at $2 to $7 and nylon at $5 to $8. Fixr prices 40 to 50 oz turf at about $3 to $4 and 90 oz at $8 to $10.
  • Infill. $0.30 to $1.75 a pound, and you need about a pound per square foot (Angi). Pet odor infill is covered on artificial grass for dogs.
  • Seams, edges and shape. Rolls come 7 to 15 feet wide (Bob Vila), so most yards need seams. Edging runs $1 to $5 a linear foot in Angi's figures and $5 to $18 installed in HomeGuide's. Cutting around pavers has its own surcharge, explained on turf between pavers.
  • Where it goes. Angi says rooftops, stairways, pool areas and concrete cost more to cover than a typical backyard.

Permit, survey and engineer paperwork

Pompano Beach's 2025 turf ordinance requires a building permit for every synthetic turf installation. The application asks for:

  • a professional, scaled landscape plan showing the turf, the living plants and how they're separated
  • the turf's brand, manufacturer specifications and warranties
  • details of any irrigation near the turf
  • a stormwater management plan signed and sealed by a professional engineer
  • a scaled cross section of the installation
  • a property survey signed and sealed by a licensed surveyor
  • where trees are in the scope of work, a Broward County Registered Tree Trimmer to qualify a tree permit

We found no published fee or review time. Ask which documents the installer prepares, which you supply, and whether the quote covers them.

Deposits and paying for the job

No cost guide gives a typical deposit for turf work, so Florida law is the benchmark to know. Under Statute 489.126, a contractor who takes more than 10% of the contract price as the first payment on residential work must apply for the needed permits within 30 days of that payment and start the work within 90 days after the permits are issued.

HomeGuide's advice is at least three local estimates, with a written, detailed one before work begins. Lawn Love says three to five.

DIY rolls vs installed price

Angi puts a DIY install at $2,000 to $4,000, with about $685 of that in tools and supplies. Bob Vila prices the turf itself at $2 to $8 a square foot. The middle path is doing the prep yourself, which Angi says can trim labor by $3 to $5 a square foot if the installer agrees. The permit applies either way, and turf repair explains how warranties treat DIY installs.

Ongoing Costs and the Sod Comparison

After installation, Angi budgets $0.25 to $0.35 per square foot for cleaning and $2 to $10 per square foot for repairs; see turf cleaning for the first.

Sod is far cheaper to lay, at under $1 a square foot in Thumbtack's figures. It costs more to keep. Fixr's 2,000 sq ft example:

  • Sod

    $1,740 to $3,520 to lay, then $1,870 to $2,170 a year, or $20,440 to $25,220 after 10 years
  • Artificial turf

$10,000 to $25,000, with no yearly lawn bill in Fixr's table

Fixr's page dates from 2022, so treat it as a rough guide; your own water bill and lawn service set the real payback. The city's watering rules are on backyard artificial grass.

Frequently asked questions

How much does artificial grass cost per square foot?

Installed, HomeGuide quotes $10 to $25 per square foot, LawnStarter $15 to $19 for mid-quality turf and Thumbtack $7 to $15 on jobs under 1,500 sq ft. The turf alone runs $2 to $8 a foot in Angi's figures. Labor, the base, removal of the old lawn and edging make up the rest.

How much does it cost to turf a 500 square foot yard?

HomeGuide's table puts 500 sq ft at $5,000 to $12,500 installed, and LawnStarter prices it at $7,400 to $9,350 with mid-quality turf. Angi splits a job that size into $1,000 to $4,000 of materials and $2,000 to $4,500 of labor. Sod removal, drainage work and long runs of edging come on top.

How much deposit should I pay for artificial turf?

No cost guide sets a standard deposit for turf. Florida law gives a useful marker: a contractor who takes more than 10% of the price up front on a home job must apply for permits within 30 days and start work within 90 days after they are issued. Get the payment schedule in writing.

Is artificial grass cheaper than sod in the long run?

Fixr's 2,000 sq ft example says it can be. Sod costs $1,740 to $3,520 to lay but $1,870 to $2,170 a year to keep, so after 10 years it reaches $20,440 to $25,220, against $10,000 to $25,000 for turf. Fixr's page dates from 2022 and uses national prices.

Is it cheaper to install artificial grass yourself?

Usually, if you have the time. Angi puts a DIY job at $2,000 to $4,000, including about $685 in tools and supplies. Bob Vila warns that a first-timer can spend weeks on what a crew finishes in a few days, and in Pompano Beach a DIY install still needs the building permit.
