Artificial Grass Drainage in Pompano Beach, FL

  • Typical cost: HomeGuide puts a yard drainage system at $1,000 to $4,000 and Angi puts drainage installation at $2,100 to $7,000. A single downspout run is $150 to $350 (HomeGuide).
  • Timeline: lifting and re-laying counts as install work, up to about three days on site in Fixr's range.
  • Choices: hole-punched or fully permeable backing, a crushed-stone base that drains, and drains or regrading where the yard holds water.
  • Rain load: NOAA's normals give Pompano Beach 55.62 inches of rain a year, 8.05 of it in June.

Pompano Beach Turf is a quick way to get a site visit from one independent local installer who can find where the water is getting stuck.

Artificial Grass Drainage Problems and Fixes

Pompano Beach gets 55.62 inches of rain in a normal year (NOAA 1991-2020, Pompano Beach Airpark). May through October each bring at least 5.26 inches, June 8.05 and September 7.58. Each of the problems below has a different fix, and a good installer will find the cause before quoting one.

Puddles and Standing Water

Water that sits on the surface after a storm means the turf, the base or the grade isn't letting it through. Angi describes the result as puddling and a squishy, wet lawn, and notes it shortens how long turf lasts.

  • Check first: is the puddle in the same low spot every time, or across the whole lawn?
  • A single spot points to grade or a local dip in the base. The whole lawn points to the base material or the backing.
  • Pooled water risks fungus growth, according to a landscaper Angi quotes.

Base Rebuild Over Wet, Sandy Soil

Sandy soil should drain fast, and it does until the water table is high. The USDA's description of the Pompano soil series (a sandy, poorly drained Florida soil; the description doesn't map individual lots) gives rapid permeability but a seasonal water table within 0 to 12 inches of the surface for 2 to 6 months in most years. In a wet summer, a base on that kind of ground has nowhere to send the water.

  • Angi's sub-base guide calls for 2 to 4 inches of base.
  • Crushed miscellaneous base is non-porous and can struggle with drainage; decomposed granite or limestone chippings drain better.
  • Angi warns that compacted soil under turf is nearly impossible to fix without removing the turf, and advises mixing loose sediment into the base soil so it doesn't compact.

Hole-Punched vs Fully Permeable Backing

The backing is the sheet the blades are stitched into, and water has to pass through it.

  • Non-permeable: Lawn Love says it's not recommended outdoors because it can't drain.
  • Hole-punched: drainage holes every few inches. Lawn Love calls it the industry's preferred choice.
  • Fully permeable: water passes through the whole surface rather than at holes. This comparison comes from turf sellers, so treat it as vendor information.

Turf sellers suggest drainage rates of 30 to 50 inches per hour for lawns, 100+ for heavy rain and 250+ with pets. Fixr's advice for heavy-rain areas is turf that has been perforated to drain quickly. The city's 2025 ordinance and Florida's DEP rule each set a permeability figure, and the two differ; they're summarized on the backyard page.

Low Spots by Downspouts and Side Yards

A downspout that empties onto the turf puts a whole roof's runoff on one corner, and no base is built for that. The fixes sit outside the turf as much as under it:

  • Underground downspout extension: $150 to $350 per downspout (HomeGuide).
  • Dry well: $300 to $1,500 (HomeGuide).
  • Yard grading: $500 to $3,000 (HomeGuide).
  • A swale along the lot line stays turf-free; see the backyard page for the state rule.

Pet Urine That Won't Drain

When a pet area smells, slow drainage is often part of it. Angi's pet-turf advice is a permeable backing with plenty of drainage holes, and HomeGuide says pet turf has enhanced drainage so liquids pass straight through. Rinse urine spots with a hose before they dry, as Angi recommends. See turf cleaning for odor treatment and turf infill for pet infills.

Artificial Grass Drainage Repair Cost and Timeline

Drainage work is priced by what it takes, not per square foot of turf. The cost guides' numbers for the pieces:

Work Cost Source
Yard drainage system $1,000 to $4,000 HomeGuide
Drainage installation $2,100 to $7,000 Angi
Yard drain, per linear foot $8 to $15 HomeGuide
Shallow French or curtain drain, per linear foot $10 to $30 HomeGuide
Underground downspout extension $150 to $350 each HomeGuide
Dry well $300 to $1,500 HomeGuide
Yard grading $500 to $3,000 HomeGuide

HomeGuide says a professionally installed drain lasts 30 to 40 years with upkeep. If the base has to be rebuilt, add lifting and re-laying the turf; base material prices are on the cost page.

Some seam adhesives need 24 hours before foot traffic. Book base work for the drier months if you can; NOAA's normals for the Airpark show January at 1.93 inches and February at 2.01, against 8.05 in June.

Before booking, ask:

  • Where exactly is the water stuck

Grade, base, backing or a downspout?
  • What base material and depth will go back in?
  • Which backing will the turf have, and what drainage rate does the maker publish for it?
  • Does the job need a permit? The city requires one for all synthetic turf; the permit paperwork is on the cost page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is water pooling on my artificial grass?

Usually the problem is under the turf, not in it. A compacted base, a non-porous base material, a low spot in the grade or a backing that drains too slowly will all hold water on top. Angi's guide says that once the soil under turf compacts, it's nearly impossible to fix without lifting the turf.

How fast should artificial turf drain?

Turf sellers suggest 30 to 50 inches per hour for a typical lawn, 100 or more for heavy-rain areas and 250 or more for pets. Pompano Beach's 2025 ordinance and Florida's DEP rule set their own numbers, so ask the installer which rate the city checks now.

Can drainage be fixed without removing the artificial grass?

Partly. Downspout extensions and drains at the edge of the lawn deal with water arriving from outside the turf. A compacted base is different: Angi says it's nearly impossible to fix without removing the turf, so the turf comes up, the base is rebuilt and the turf goes back down.

Do I need a French drain under artificial turf?

Only if the yard itself holds water. HomeGuide says yard drainage systems work best for standing water in the lawn, at $8 to $15 per linear foot, and a shallow French drain runs $10 to $30 per foot.
